This month 4th Estate launched a new series, 4th Shorts, publishing two short story collections – Barbara the Slut by Lauren Holmes and Single, Carefree, Mellow by Katherine Heiny in distinctive pocket-size paperback A formats with flaps.
Assistant Editor Lettice Franklin said, ‘As soon as I read both Barbara the Slut and Single, Carefree, Mellow on submission, I wanted to give a copy of each to every one of my friends to brighten their daily commutes. The reviewers seemed to agree with me, greeting both books ecstatically. So for their second publication we are doing something slightly different – both portable and giftable. I can’t think of a better Valentine’s Day present.
I hope 4th Shorts will continue to establish 4th Estate as the home of the best short stories being written today.’
To celebrate the publishing of the first books in the 4th Shorts series, 4thEstate.co.uk has launched a new short story hub, a regularly updated, mobile-friendly online reading service that offers visitors short stories from big-name authors and new, exciting voices. With a launch line-up that includes stories by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Hilary Mantel, Anthony Doerr and, of course, Lauren Holmes and Katherine Heiny, it promises to introduce curious readers to 4th Estate’s rich back catalogue on an easily digestible scale.
4th Estate also recently launched The Guardian and 4th Estate BAME Prize, a new short story writing competition for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic authors, hoping to inspire the writing of more short, sharp fiction.
