Sunday the 15th of March sees Mother’s Day, a day to celebrate every single thing your Mum has done for you. Whether it’s something as basic as your washing, as unconditionally kind as coming to collect you from the train station when you’ve missed the last bus and don’t want to shell out for a cab, or telling your dad that he really ought to respect your life choices (even if it means you’ll be out of work for a year until the green grows out of your hair), Mum has your back, and Mum’s are the best. And, in some cases, let’s not forget that Mum has to be Dad too. To help you give your Mum the very best gift possible, we’ve paired some of our brilliant Mum-friendly books with some especially Mum-friendly presents. Spoil her rotten this Mother’s Day.
Gift: Hummingbird Cupcakes
If your Mum fancies herself as a bit of a cake baker, or just simply fancies herself as a cake fancier then she’ll love Hummingbird. Their fabulous new book is crammed full of exciting recipes for all sorts of cakes and treats – everything from Red Velvet Brownies to Peanut Butter Ice-cream.
To purchase your own artisanal cupcakes, order online here or drop in to one of the many London branches. There are Mother’s Day specials available from £19.50 between 13th – 15th March. Sweet.
Book: Laline Paull – The Bees
Gift: Burt’s Bees Head to Toe kit
Laline Paull’s triumphant and much applauded debut (recently longlisted for the Bailey’s Women’s Prize for Fiction) is set entirely inside a beehive, following the perspective of the bee ‘Flora 717’ as it works its way up the ranks. Along the way it discovers the hidden truths and intricate social structures of the hive of which we can draw chilling parallels to our own world.
Of course, the obvious match for a novel about a beehive is a product using beeswax. Burt’s Bees make cosmetics using only natural ingredients and go to great lengths to minimise their impact on the environment. The ‘Head to Toe’ kit has a bit of everything and comes in at a price of £9.99. Order online here, or pick up at Boots, John Lewis and many other high street shops.
Gift: Prestat Chocolates’ Best Mother in the Word hamper
Katherine Heiny’s recently released and much celebrated collection of ten exquisite short stories about desire, loss, deception and compassion is the perfect Mother’s Day gift. Each tale is written with poignancy and poise, instantly relatable and so funny that you’ll find yourself calling your friends just to read bits out to them. A short story collection is sort of the literary equivalent of a box of chocolates, so this is a good match for the equally exquisite Prestat Chocolates.
Prestat has lots of Mother’s Day options including the ‘Best Mother in the World – Hamper’ at £25. Have a look on their website for more details. They even come Roald Dahl approved – “I do so love chocolate truffles as Prestat makes them.”
These are best enjoyed together in the bath – book in one hand, a chocolate in the other. What could be better?
Gift: An 80’s film from Blinkbox
Hadley Freeman’s new book ‘Life Moves Pretty Fast’ make its way to the shelves in May this year, but you can pre-order it now. Hadleylooks at the influence of American flicks in the 80’s and their long lasting impression on both the hearts of the later generations. If, like us, you weren’t alive when Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was released, but you can still quote every sentence and ‘Twist and Shout’ by The Beatles makes you smile when you hear it, then this one is for you, and for your Mum.
If you want to prepare for it, you and Mum can watch all the classics of cinema (and television!) this weekend with Blinkbox, for a one-time rental or even buy them for life and watch them again and again. Don’t worry, we’ve already checked, they have The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. There’s also a Mother’s Day Collection if you’re stumped for choice. Films and television episodes start at £1.
Happy gifting, and Happy Mother’s Day!
