Not That Kind of Single, Carefree, Mellow Girl

While our summer certainly feels like it’s over (or at least dwindling rapidly…), Lena Dunham’s is not. The actor, director, producer AND writer of the upcoming Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s Learned has instagrammed her summer reading list – a nice collation of book porn to keep us going through this British autumnal blip.

Among this set of books is Single, Carefree, Mellow by Katherine Heiny, also published by 4th Estate (and out in February next year).

The book is a tender and ruefully funny look at varieties of love, secrets and betrayal in ten exquisite stories that form a guided tour of the human heart. Here, revealed for the first time, is its cover:

How fitting that this should be on Dunham’s reading list, as Not That Kind of Girl explores many of the themes that make up Heiny’s debut novel. Dunham has said, of her debut:

‘This book contains stories about wonderful nights with terrible boys and terrible days with wonderful friends, about ambition and the two existential crises I had before the age of twenty. About fashion and its many discontents. About publicly sharing your body, having to prove yourself in a meeting full of fifty-year-old men, and the health fears (tinnitus, lamp dust, infertility) that keep me up at night.’

To WIN a copy of Not That Kind of Girl, send us your summer reading lists and we’ll post the best ones on our website! Put ‘My Summer Reading’ in the subject line. Winners will be announced next Friday.

Not That Kind of Girl is published by 4th Estate on Thursday 30th of September.

Single, Carefree Mellow by Katherine Heiny is published next year on the 12th of February.
