At 4th Estate we keep our ear close to the ground, or rather, our eyes below the line. Lurking in comments sections is a habit we just can’t kick, but listening in on the chatter surrounding the Booker longlist was more than an excuse for procrastination – in fact we’ve been given a kick up the proverbial. Amid the genuine excitement and inevitable trolling, one message came through loud and clear: readers want to get their hands on the longlisted books and see what all the fuss is about for themselves.
The Dog is a funny and wholly original work of international literature, set in the ever-fascinating Dubai, and led by a brilliantly entertaining anti-hero. It is six years since we published Netherland, Joseph’s previous novel, which was also longlisted for the Man Booker, won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, became an international bestseller, and was received ecstatically by critics, and readers alike. James Wood hailed it as ‘an exquisitely written novel, a large fictional achievement, and one of the most remarkable post-colonial books I have ever read’, and even Barack Obama praised it, calling it ‘an excellent novel’.
All this being said, we’re very happy to announce that you won’t have to wait until September to make your minds up about The Dog by Joseph O’Neill. You can download the eBook right here, before it is published next week on 28 July 2014, where it will be available from all good book retailers. Because, we agree, it’s not right that you only have our word that The Dog is one of the most intelligent, scintillating, riotously witty books of the year. You can read it – and come to that conclusion for yourselves.
