Tash Aw’s ‘Five Star Billionaire’ Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2013

• Jul 23, 2013 • Tags: , ,

Tash Aw‘s Five Star Billionaire has been chosen as one of the 13 titles on this year’s Man Booker Prize longlist.

In this dizzying and highly accomplished novel, Tash Aw charts the lives of five Malaysian immigrants as they collide in developing Shanghai, counterpointing their adventures with all that they have left behind. The result is a brilliant examination of the migrations that are shaping this dazzling city, and how these journeys exact a heavy toll on the individuals who undertake them.

4th Estate Publishing Director Nick Pearson said: ‘Obviously we’re thrilled that Tash’s novel has made the Booker longlist. In a short writing career this is the second time he’s managed it. No one has written quite like this about the reshaping of China, and this is very richly deserved’.

This year’s longlist of 13 books was selected by a panel of five judges chaired by academic, critic and writer Robert Macfarlane. The longlist has been selected from 151 titles, of which 14 were called in by the judging panel.  Robert Macfarlane, Chair of judges commented:

‘This is surely the most diverse longlist in Man Booker history: wonderfully various in terms of geography, form, length and subject. These 13 outstanding novels range from the traditional to the experimental, from the first century AD to the present day, from 100 pages to 1,000 and from Shanghai to Hendon.’
