Maritime Lecture Series: The Environment Now with Philip Hoare

Philip Hoare, author of Leviathan or The Whale and The Sea Inside, explores London’s strange relationship with the whale, from the beached right whale at Deptford which seemed to augur the death of Oliver Cromwell, through London’s importance as a whaling port in the 18th and 19th centuries, to the whale that swam up the Thames in 2006.  What does the city’s changing attitude to whales – from omen to industrial resource to emblem of ecological threat – say about the vexed relationship between human and natural history?
